Schema Markup for Local Businesses: A Beginner's Guide
Schema markup is one of those technical SEO topics that sounds complicated but, for most local businesses, comes down to a handful of simple implementations that can make a genuine difference in how Google reads and displays your website.

What Is Schema Markup?
Schema markup (also called structured data) is code that you add to your website to help search engines understand the meaning of your content — not just the words, but what those words represent.
Google can read text just fine. But schema markup removes ambiguity. Without it, Google sees: "Open Mon–Fri 9am–5pm." With LocalBusiness schema, Google understands: this is a business, these are its hours, it's structured data I can use to generate rich results.
The term "schema" comes from Schema.org, a collaborative project between Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex that created a shared vocabulary for structured data on the web.
Why Schema Markup Matters for Local SEO
For local businesses, schema markup serves two key purposes:
1. It helps Google understand and trust your business information. When your NAP (name, address, phone), hours, and service area are explicitly declared in LocalBusiness schema, Google doesn't have to infer that information from your page content. It knows. This supports citation consistency efforts and reinforces the signals your Google Business Profile sends.
2. It can enable rich results in search. Structured data enables features like star ratings in organic results, FAQs that expand directly in search, event listings, and more. While these don't directly change your rankings, rich results significantly improve click-through rates — which ultimately does influence rankings through engagement signals.
The Schema Types Every Local Business Should Have
LocalBusiness Schema This is the most important schema type for any local business. It declares your business as a local entity and includes:
- Business name
- Address (structured with street, city, state, zip, country separately)
- Phone number
- Website URL
- Business hours (openingHoursSpecification)
- Geo coordinates (latitude and longitude)
- Business type/category
- Price range (optional but helpful)
There are more specific subtypes you can use if they apply: Dentist, LegalService, HomeAndConstructionBusiness, HealthAndBeautyBusiness, and dozens more. Using the most specific applicable type helps Google understand what you do.
Review/AggregateRating Schema If you display customer reviews or ratings on your website, marking them up with review schema can enable gold stars to appear in your organic search results. This can dramatically increase click-through rates. Note: you cannot mark up third-party reviews (Google reviews, Yelp reviews) — only reviews you host directly on your site.
FAQPage Schema Marking up your FAQ sections with FAQPage schema can enable your questions and answers to expand directly in search results, taking up significantly more space on the page. BreadcrumbList Schema This helps Google understand your site structure and can display breadcrumbs in search results, showing users exactly where a page sits in your site hierarchy. It's a minor ranking signal but a nice user experience enhancement.
Service Schema If you offer specific services, marking them up with Service schema helps Google understand your offerings at a granular level — useful for services businesses across all the industries we serve.
How to Add Schema Markup to Your Website
There are three ways to add structured data to a website:
Method 1: JSON-LD (Recommended)
JSON-LD is a JavaScript notation that Google recommends. It lives in the <head> or <body> of your HTML as a <script type="application/ld+json"> block. It doesn't interfere with your visible content and is easy to update.
A basic LocalBusiness JSON-LD block looks like this:

Method 2: WordPress Plugins If your site runs on WordPress, plugins like RankMath, Yoast SEO Premium, or Schema Pro can generate and inject LocalBusiness schema automatically based on your settings. These are often sufficient for small businesses.
Method 3: Google Tag Manager You can inject JSON-LD schema via Google Tag Manager without modifying website code. This is useful if you don't have direct access to your site's HTML.
How to Test Your Schema Markup
Once implemented, test your structured data using Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results). It will show you what Google sees and flag any errors or warnings.
Also check Google Search Console's "Enhancements" section — if Google detects structured data errors on your site, they'll be reported there.
Common Schema Mistakes to Avoid
- Marking up information not visible on the page — Google may penalize structured data that doesn't reflect actual page content
- Using incorrect property names — schema is case-sensitive and requires precise syntax
- Duplicate schema blocks — multiple conflicting LocalBusiness declarations can confuse Google
- Not keeping it updated — if your hours or address change, update your schema
Do You Need a Developer to Implement Schema?
For JSON-LD implementation, basic technical knowledge is helpful but not required if you use a CMS like WordPress with a good SEO plugin.
